Dysport® vs. Botox®

Cosmetic injectables are consistently some of the top-requested treatments at medspas. Why? Because they deliver fast, noticeable, anti-aging results without the need for cosmetic surgery.

The two main types of injectables are neuromodulators and fillers. Neuromodulators tackle moderate to severe wrinkles that form with facial expressions (like frowning and raising your eyebrows) and fillers restore lost facial volume to plump cheeks, lips, and more.

There are many different brands of neuromodulators and fillers, and the right combination for you depends on your unique features and goals. Injectables have the power to erase the look of pesky lines and wrinkles, giving you a more youthful appearance and boosted confidence.

SkinReMEDI proudly brings all the best injectables to our patients, including the top neuromodulators on the market: Botox® and Dysport®. If you’re considering injections to minimize the look of wrinkles, it’s time to learn more about the benefits and differences of Botox and Dysport.

How Botox works

Botox is a cosmetic injectable that contains onabotulinumtoxinA, a purified form of a naturally occurring toxin. It works by temporarily reducing muscle activity in key points on your face to minimize the look of wrinkles.

Botox was FDA-approved in 2002 for cosmetic use. Today, it’s one of the top-selling cosmetic injectables used to minimize the look of moderate-to-severe wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes.

Muscle activity and facial expressions are the leading cause of horizontal forehead lines, lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), and crow’s feet around the eyes, but Botox injections temporarily relax muscles and smooth wrinkles.

Our SkinReMEDI aesthetician uses a tiny needle to inject Botox in specific points, and it begins working almost immediately to reduce the look of lines and wrinkles. Optimal results appear within 24-48 hours and last up to four months.

How Dysport works

Dysport contains abobotulinumtoxinA, a purified neurotoxin that’s similar to what’s in Botox. It was FDA-approved in 2009 to temporarily treat frown lines between the eyebrows.

The vertical lines that appear between eyebrows are the result of furrowing your brow. They’re medically known as glabellar lines, and they’re sometimes called “11s.” Dysport relaxes the muscles responsible for the lines, making them less noticeable.

Our aesthetician makes injections in specific locations above your eyebrows. Over the next 2-3 days, you begin noticing your wrinkles fade from view, and your results can last up to five months in some cases.

Choosing the right injectable for you

Although Botox and Dysport both address signs of aging with purified neurotoxins, there are differences between the two options. They contain different neurotoxins, and they’re manufactured differently.

Dysport is generally a more diluted formula, with a lower molecular weight, which means you may need more units per treatment but results could last longer. Dysport may also work faster than Botox and effects may spread farther from the injection site, which can be a desirable outcome for tackling certain wrinkles.

Different potencies in Dysport and Botox can cause varying effects and affect the duration of your results, but each has its benefits. The best injectable treatment for you depends on your area of concern and your goals for treatment.

Our aestheticians at SkinReMEDI are highly trained in cosmetic injectables, and we’re here to help you make the right decision. We offer comprehensive consultations, where we evaluate your skin needs and your goals, and we create personalized treatment plans for all our clients.
