First 3 appointments are spaced 4 weeks apart. Appointments 4 & 5 are 6 weeks apart and appointment 6 will be between 6-8 weeks apart. We encourage booking in advance. This is to assure we are treating the hair follicle during a full growth cycle. In order to guarantee the best possible results in hair reduction. Some people will need more than 6 treatments for some areas, while 6 treatments will suffice for others. Everyone is different and we will not know until 8 weeks after the 6th treatment. It is important to keep in mind that Laser Hair Removal is actually Laser Hair Reduction and hair can return at any time due to any bodily or hormonal changes including but not limited to prescription medicine changes(i.e birth control) autoimmune disease, pregnancy and/or thyroid issues.
Yes, we ask that you shave 24-48 hrs ahead of every appointment until otherwise instructed by your practitioner. We DO NOT recommend waxing as this process removes the hair entirely. Lasers work by rupturing the follicle inside and we need the follicle to be intact. Waxing in between appointments can greatly lessen the efficacy of LHR.
First, you have to understand that laser hair removal is actually a hair reduction procedure and is considered a semi-permanent process. Each laser hair removal (a.k.a. hair reduction) session gets rid of only 12%-20% of hair follicles on the treated area. Therefore, with the help of simple math, you can calculate that for maximum results it can take from 5-8 sessions on average.
However, it is more complicated than that. There is a big range of factors influencing the efficiency of laser hair removal treatments, including laser hair removal treatments for legs. Just to name a few:
LHR is a combination of Optical energy and Radio Frequency. The Optical energy feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin and the Radio Frequency creates heat within the skin. Both energies are required to swell each individual hair follicle in order to cause reduction of hair and eventual loss of hair. We do offer numbing at a cost of $10 per small area, $15 medium/large and $30 for whole legs. We do recommend taking Motrin before your appointment to lessen the pain if you find yourself very sensitive. REMEMBER at each visit energies do go up and sensation can feel different every time. One area can feel very different than another, prepare accordingly.
You should start seeing results after the first 3 sessions. If you don’t see any change in a hair reduction, notify your laser technician and discuss the ways you both can improve the effectiveness of the procedure. If you had 8 sessions and were satisfied with the results in general, it is not unusual if you have to come back for touch-ups. No one can guarantee results within a specific amount of sessions with 100% guarantee, as every ‘body’ responds differently. Some people experience complete loss and it can last years while others have 60%-80% reduction with some recidivism. However, in our practice, we have seen clients who reduced almost 100% of the hair within 3-4 sessions. Follow the recommendations and be patient.
Yes, pregnancy is a contraindication and we ask that you inform us if you think there may be a chance you are pregnant. With breastfeeding we recommend waiting until you are finished breastfeeding to resume or begin LHR.
After surgery we recommend up to a year depending on doctors consent. We will need the approval of your M.D to laser over any area that’s been ‘worked on’ within the year or less.
Lasers track pigment (SEE BELOW) unfortunately, light hair rarely responds to LHR as its just too fair to be picked up by the energy. Though is one known side effect of LHR on Fitzpatrick Skin Tones 1-4(SEE BELOW) is the lightening of birthmarks, freckles, tattoos, nail polish, clothing etc. We use white materials to cover those areas on the body in order to prevent this from happening and ask that you wear light colored clothing on the day of your treatment
During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.
Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn't result in permanent hair removal. Multiple laser hair removal treatments are needed for initial hair removal, and maintenance treatments might be needed as well. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair.
We operate the laser using ‘The Fitzpatrick scale: The Fitzpatrick scale is a numerical classification schema for human skin color. It was developed in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick as a way to estimate the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light. The Fitzpatrick scale remains a recognized tool for dermatological research into human skin pigmentation. We use this system because LHR works by tracking pigment. For example, passing a laser over fair skin with blonde hair will most likely result in no reduction of hair. While any birthmarks or freckles on that skin could lighten with LHR treatments as they would appear darker and the laser would track those. This is why we ask you to wear WHITE or LIGHT-COLORED CLOTHING TO APPOINTMENTS, we use white pencil, white tape, and white table paper to cover areas we don’t want to take pigment out of i.e. tattoos, nails, a favorite birthmark, clothing, etc.
On Fitzpatrick Skin Tones 4, 5 and 6 we REQUIRE a test spot prior to performing a treatment. We do this to protect the client from HYPERPIGMENTATION: A condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin. Hyperpigmentation can have causes that aren't due to LASER TREATMENTS. Examples include acne (both untreated and treated) or picking of acne, burns, wounds, scrapes, tattoo, piercings, a suntan, skin care products, undiagnosed or untreated hormonal imbalances, pregnancy & medication side effects. HYPERPIGMENTATION IS WORSENED BY CHOOSING NOT TO APPLY A SUNSCREEN DAILY; CAUSING THE HYPERPIGMENTATION TO WORSEN/DARKEN OVER TIME. Any Hyperpigmentation noticed after the test spot would mean that the client is not a candidate for LHR and we would direct them towards a YAG LASER TREATMENT. If Hyperpigmentation occurs during a 6- 8 treatment session in other words at treatment 3 or 5 for example; all other sessions are to be canceled as to avoid darkening the skin.
